The country that is getting the skilled labour from Germany: Turkey

Nowadays, it is frequently discussed that the migration trend between Turkey and Germany has changed direction and the Turks living in Germany are returning to Turkey. I will discuss here, who are living in Germany with a Turkish background; who are going to Turkey, from Germany; what do they do in Turkey; and what can be the first consequences for both of the countries.

First of all, we need to know that, one-fifth of those living in Germany have migration background (Akp?nar, 2012), and 25% of them have Turkish background (Özba?l?, 2009). Contrary to common belief, the migration relationship between Turkey and Germany has a long history[1]. Today, it is known that many different groups of people with Turkish background are living in Germany. Although, these people are called in many different names (like: Guest Labour, Turkish immigrant, Dark head, Alamanc?, Gurbetçi, walking Euro, Transmigrate…), I would like to refer to them as « people with Turkish background: PWTB ».

[1] The first group migration (around 8000 people) was from Ottoman Empire to Germany at 1907. But the new wave, starting 31th of October 1961, was completely different. These were in the aim of working in Germany for some couple of years and turn back to Turkey, as guest labour. But they’re mainly settled there. (Alkan, 2011)
