Pierre Gonod reviews here Bernard Préel’s book, Le Choc des générations, in which Préel divides the 20th century into decades and then shows how far the events of each period have marked the youth of each generation. Having thus sketched the typical features of each generation, Préel investigates the relationships of cooperation or conflict that may develop among them, focusing in particular on 2005, when the age-group most active in the social upheavals of 1968 will reach retirement.
Pierre Gonod uses Bernard Préel’s book to highlight the crucial role played by differences of generation in social change and, conversely, the benefits to social forecasting of using generations as a basis of analysis. Along the way, he provides a useful bibliography of the main literature on this topic, which has often been discussed in the pages of Futuribles
