A High Risk Environment
Complementing the article by Pierre Mayaudon, General Eyraud makes three observations:
– while Japan is not subject to any direct threat, there are many potential territorial conflicts in the region in which China and Japan sometimes have contrary interests. Japan and China maintain (watchful) relations, but China may very well become either a responsible great power willing to cooperate in good faith in the establishment of an agreed regional security system, or a military superpower aiming at re-establishing its historical hegemony over Asia;
– the JDF is relatively small in size, but Japan has powerful weapons and high technology;
– finally, who knows what the relationship will be between Japan and the US in 2050, when China will have a powerful nuclear arsenal?
It is quite possible over this timeframe that the obstacles to Japan’s military nuclearisation will be removed.
Un environnement à haut risque
