Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban (1633-1707), most notably Marshal of France, made a name for himself in the kingdom of France by building fortifications around numerous towns and cities, constructing canals and major ports, perfecting warfare techniques and producing works on military art and general policy with a very free spirit.
