A New State of Affairs in Crisis Management

Coping with High Intensity Shocks

This article is published in Futuribles journal ,

Since passing the lips of the then President of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker in January 2016, the concept of polycrisis has become increasingly common in analyses of our present-day world. Faced with health-related, economic, climate, energy and geopolitical crises, our societies face multidimensional challenges that require institutional, political and economic decision-makers to revise how they interpret global events and to adapt their tools accordingly. Whether one-off or structural, the product of sudden shocks or potentially predictable developments, crises are coming at us from all directions, pitching citizens and other actors into unprecedented situations and leaving them, at times, totally perplexed. What is to be done in this new context? Patrick Lagadec, a leading specialist in the prevention and management of crisis situations, examines this new state of affairs. As his book aimed at these ‘disoriented societies’ is published, drawing on his own experience and that of the various actors he has encountered or worked with, he offers paths of reflection, action and reinvention for ‘steering a course through chaos’.
