This study is a result of prolonged and never-ending debate among optimists, pessimists, possibilists or "creative realists". These three perspectives are applied to futures for four urban types "chosen from among a score of worthy candidates" :
1) hard-edge city : the toughest case of all : older industrial cities in a downward spiral (possibilists seek to revise archaic housing codes, facilitate urban homesteading, delegate decision-making power to neighbourhoods, expand urban gardens and energy-conservation projects) ;
