It is also embodied in Michelin’s announcement in the spring of 2024 that it would guarantee a decent wage for all its employees worldwide.

In the midst of the French debate on the smicardisation[1] of wage earners, purchasing power and the working poor, the multinational, founded in 1889, is breaking new ground. Its proposal is part of a dual tradition. The first is the historical tradition of a company committed to social protection, in the tradition of paternalism. Under this outdated name, which today has a negative connotation, lies a series of social projects that the tyre giant first deployed in its Clermont-Ferrand region, with nurseries, clinics, housing assistance and other benefits for families. Secondly, Michelin’s announcements confirm its commitment to a much more recent movement, namely that of companies around the world that are committed to establishing social protection floors.

The idea of a living wage is to pay enough to allow not just a subsistence minimum but a decent life. The amount is calculated: wages are set at a level that should enable a family of two adults and two children to feed and house themselves, but also to build up precautionary savings so that they can plan ahead. This scale, established for this family configuration, can be applied to other types of household. It also varies according to location (country but also regions within countries) to take into account differences in purchasing power. In addition to this living wage, Michelin, like other French companies, offers a wide range of preventive and provident services, with a minimum base of services and guarantees valid throughout the world.[2]

This international minimum floor supplements national social benefits where they are insufficient (below the floor level). It makes up for their absence when they are non-existent. Under the name ‘Michelin One Care’, Michelin guarantees all its employees, throughout the world, benefits based on three priorities: time to welcome a child (a minimum of 14 weeks paid maternity/adoption leave and a minimum of four weeks paid paternity/adoption leave at 100% of salary); protection of the family in the event of death (payment of a death benefit of at least one year’s salary and an education allowance for children); access to health cover for all employees and their families.

        Voir aussi

Global companies and social protection: a return to Bismarck?

  <use xlink:href="https://www.futuribles.com/wp-content/themes/futurible/dist/images/icon-lib.svg?version022025#arrow-right"></use>

25 January 2024

                        DAMON Julien

                      6 min.

  <use xlink:href="https://www.futuribles.com/wp-content/themes/futurible/dist/images/icon-lib.svg?version022025#icon-eye"></use>

          Newswatch

                              Economics
                  Society

Michelin’s living wage, a new material expression of this international social commitment, is calculated with the expert support of a specialist non-governmental organisation, Fair Wage.[3] At the beginning of 2024, the tyre giant was awarded Fair Wage’s Global Living Wage Employer certification, which certifies that all the Group’s employees (excluding newly acquired companies or those in the process of being sold) receive remuneration at least equal to the living wage.

In practical terms, this living wage is significantly higher than the legal minimum wage in each country where it is established. In France, for example, at the beginning of 2024, the SMIC is 21,200 euros gross per year, while the living wage at Michelin is estimated at 40,000 euros in Paris or 25,000 euros in Clermont-Ferrand. Abroad, Michelin cites the examples of Greenville, in the United States, with a living wage of 42,200 US dollars, three times the local minimum wage; Beijing, with a salary of 69,000 yuan (i.e. two and a half times the Chinese minimum wage); and Manaus, in Brazil, with a living wage of 37,500 rials (i.e. just over twice the minimum wage).

Using these criteria and thresholds, it appears that 95% of Michelin’s 130,000 employees, who work in 175 countries, will be earning a decent wage in 2021. The company has therefore adjusted the pay of 5% of its employees.

Over and above general philosophical questions and considerations of the desire to appear to be better off in social terms, the company is also seeking, with such an initiative, to increase its attractiveness. By emphasising and communicating on remuneration and other social protection elements, Michelin hopes to retain its employees and attract more applications to join its ranks.

The Group, whose head office is still in Clermont-Ferrand, has skilfully relayed its involvement. It should be noted that other large companies, which have invested in social protection systems, are also working to promote the living wage. The Fair Wage website contains case studies of L’Oréal, Adidas, Ikea, H&M, AstraZeneca and Unilever.

The movement seems to be well underway, renewing a number of debates on the role of companies in social cohesion and fair remuneration.
