The adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at a special session of the United Nations General Assembly in September 2015 was the result of a diplomatic process begun at the beginning of the century \u2014 the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), adopted by the United Nations in 2000 and defined as targets to be achieved by 2015. These were specifically focused on poverty reduction and human development in developing countries.<\/h6>\n\n\n

The MDGs<\/h2>\n

  1. To eradicate extreme poverty and hunger: <\/strong>halve the proportion of people living in extreme poverty and suffering from hunger.<\/li>\n
  2. To achieve universal primary education: <\/strong>ensure that all children, boys and girls alike, can benefit from a complete, quality primary education.<\/li>\n
  3. To promote gender equality and empower women: <\/strong>eliminate gender disparities at all levels of education.<\/li>\n
  4. To reduce child mortality <\/strong>by two-thirds between 1990 and 2015.<\/li>\n
  5. To improve maternal health: <\/strong>reduce the maternal mortality rate by three quarters between 1990 and 2015.<\/li>\n
  6. To combat HIV\/AIDS, malaria and other diseases: <\/strong>halt and reverse the spread of HIV\/AIDS, malaria and other major diseases.<\/li>\n
  7. To ensure environmental sustainability: <\/strong>integrating the principles of sustainable development into national policies and reversing the loss of environmental resources.<\/li>\n
  8. To develop a global partnership for development: <\/strong>establish a global partnership for development, including specific targets for aid, trade and debt, to meet the needs of developing countries.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    It was at the so-called Rio+20 conference in 2012 that the SDG process was launched as a way of overcoming the twofold failure of the MDGs, whose deadline was fast approaching (even though extreme poverty had indeed been reduced), and of the conference itself, which, like Copenhagen in 2009, failed to make any significant commitments to combat global warming. Compared with the diplomatic process launched in Rio in 1992, when the Brundtland Report<\/a> introduced the notion of sustainable development, the SDGs reflected a twofold paradigm shift:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
