Paul Magnette successfully demonstrates “how we are constructed by work” because it forces us to confront its concrete reality, enabling us to develop our experience and our skills, and to feel the pleasure of a job well done. He also shows “how work unites us” by stimulating a feeling of interdependence, cooperation, and acknowledgment of each individual’s contribution.

Initially, the workers’ movement focused on the emancipating role of labor. Paul Magnette tells us that, in the words of Proudhon, “oppressed labor leads to an oppressive society; free and autonomous labor lays the foundations for a liberated society” (p. 46). However, Marx viewed the emancipating role of work as the goal of a post-capitalist future that was forever just beyond the horizon. In his view, the “realm of freedom” was to be found in the time spent outside work, confirming the irremediably heteronomous nature of labor. The productivism shared by the bourgeoisie and the working classes ensures that “over and beyond everything that divides them, these rival classes share a work ethic based on effort, abnegation, and self-sacrifice” (p. 52). The Left has therefore rarely sought to change how labor is organized and “the question of the content and meaning of work has remained in the shadows” (p. 65).

        Voir aussi

Attitudes to Work in France: Trends and Prospects

  <use xlink:href="https://www.futuribles.com/wp-content/themes/futurible/dist/images/icon-lib.svg?version022025#arrow-right"></use>

25 August 2023

                        CLERTÉ Jennifer
                                MALENFER Marc

                      22 p.

  <use xlink:href="https://www.futuribles.com/wp-content/themes/futurible/dist/images/icon-lib.svg?version022025#icon-post"></use>

          Journal Article

                              Society

Thus, while reducing the amount of time spent at work remains a legitimate aspiration, doing so “without improving its nature would simply, in the words of Simone Weil, turn ‘people into a swarm of idlers, who for two hours a day would be slaves’” (p. 128). Paul Magnette quite properly highlights the experience of the first months of the COVID-19 pandemic: “The proper meaning and value of labor returns when there is no obstacle to the desire to do one’s job well and workers suddenly discover they have the power to participate in defining their own tasks, as was often the case in the unusual context of the pandemic” (p. 134). A promising period of reflection is beginning with the concept of democracy at work, understood not only as the presence of employees within management bodies but, more profoundly, the right to construct a collective worker viewpoint on how and why people work and to ensure that perspective is enforced within the concrete organization of labor, thus challenging the concept of subordination.

The few minor inaccuracies in Magnette’s analysis in no way lessen the political importance of his book. For example, his reference to a so-called “new spirit of capitalism”[4] “encouraging workers to take the initiative and take on responsibilities, promoting horizontal cooperation between colleagues rather than a hierarchical structure” (p. 79) is regrettable. However, he does correctly describe the overwhelming inclination within modern management (particularly in the services sector) to break down “every activity into simple and standardized operations with execution periods that are as tight as possible and that must be recorded on a timesheet to ensure that workers do not waste a second of the time they are selling to the employer” (p. 82). Moreover, when Paul Magnette writes, for example, that “free work only occupies a small part of our existence, a little time left to us by our job” (p. 29), it might also be said that he appears to underestimate the importance of the “living labor”[5] that nestles at the heart of any work, even subservient tasks. However, this is of little matter if readers retain his final message: “The Left was created in reaction to new forms of organizing labor; forgetting that fact has almost brought about its death” (p. 146).

————————-
This article has been translated from French and edited by Cadenza Academic Translations.
Translator: Morag Young, Editor: Zahira Ransome, Senior editor: Mark Mellor

At least in my opinion.
