In Europe, in particular, they \u201cseem to be very much overtaken by events and to lack capacities for intervention in response to the economic crisis\u201d. We are thus seeing a crisis of the nation state today, undermined as it is by substantial budgetary disequilibria, remarks Drevet and, in his view, the future seems scarcely more encouraging.<br \/>\nIn this context, how do things stand with the European institutions? \u201cThey too have lost ground\u201d, argues Jean-Fran\u00e7ois Drevet, being constrained both by the governments themselves, which do not wish to provide them with the necessary resources and by their lack of democratic legitimacy.<br \/>\nThus, caught \u201cbetween globalization and the temptation of re-nationalization\u201d, some are beginning to question the \u201crelevance of the European decision-making level\u201d \u2014 a reality that leads Drevet to stress Europe\u2019s need to stir itself in order to defend its role.\r<\/p>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Governments seem to be increasingly powerless, notes Jean-Fran\u00e7ois Drevet in this article.
