Among these, Moldavia occupies a special place, being torn both geographically and politically between Romania (now a member of the Union) and Russia. Jean-Fran\u00e7ois Drevet outlines the atypical profile of this extremely poor East European country, a great many of whose inhabitants could shortly acquire Romanian nationality (and hence European rights and duties), even though their own state is not a member of the Union.
