(The United Nations foresees that in 2025, about 5 billion of the planet&#8217;s 8.3 billion inhabitants will be living in cities &#8211; 4 billion of them in cities of the &#8220;third world&#8221;).<br \/>\nIt is therefore easy to understand why abundant literature has been devoted to the future of cities, their size, shape, functions, and to the roles which they might be taking in the era of globalization. Concerns include the possibility of overwhelming changes from the impact of information and communication technology and the challenges they may impose in terms of identity, social cohesion and collective dynamics.<br \/>\nTh\u00e9r\u00e8se Spector has made a conscious effort to give us an update on research which bears on urban dynamics.<br \/>\nShe shows at first the different conceptions of the city of tomorrow (metropolis, megalopolis, global city, metapole), the particular characteristics of each and the internal and external issues each is likely to confront.
