Fifty years of publishing a French periodical may seem quite a long time, but when set against the timespan of civilizations it can be seen as a mere moment. If we are minded to take a bird\u2019s-eye view of the development of European civilization, we have to consider much longer periods of time, as this article by Jean Ha\u00ebntjens demonstrates. Examining that historical development and the capacity Europeans have always shown to absorb influences from other cultures, Ha\u00ebntjens foresees the possibility that European civilization will continue to press forward and assume a new dimension\u2014ecological civilization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Drawing at once on the history of European civilization, on recent studies identifying the emergence of an ecological civilization that is struggling to take shape, and on the universalist scope of European culture, Ha\u00ebntjens points out what the key elements of a future European ecological civilization might be (benefits from urbanism, craft skills, specific agricultural characteristics, maritime culture, the arts of living, an ecological model etc.). In conclusion, he suggests some political pathways and levers that could likely assist in its realization. For that to happen, it will be necessary, in particular, to convince European citizens to participate in the process and hence to see it as a project for building a shared future (and shared hope). A desirable prospect of potentially universal scope, but what might the timescale be?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
