Drevet described the broadly independent status of that territory within the kingdom of Denmark\u2014but also as part of the European Union\u2014and laid out the various interests in play. Not much has changed since then, except that Donald Trump\u2019s interest was at the time almost exclusively economic (mineral resources and the country\u2019s geographical location on polar routes), whereas in 2025 a re-elected Trump also seems driven by a thirst for neo-colonial conquest. Might he achieve his ends? Five years after the initial alarm, how is Greenland reacting to this new US attempt to take over its territory?
