Recent years have seen the return of a \u2018space race\u2019 among the world\u2019s major powers (USA, China, India, European States), with a number of private players, mainly from Big Tech, involved more or less directly and radically disrupting the sector. This geopolitical and geo-economic aspect of space competition regularly hits the headlines. But space also serves increasingly as a testing ground in various, more classical economic sectors, such as agri-food, pharmaceuticals, materials and energy. This article throws light on one of these aspects: so-called \u2018in-orbit manufacturing\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After reminding us why space may prove to be an advantageous milieu for some (microgravity-related) industrial processes and reviewing the beginnings of \u2018made in Space\u2019, Auriane Decker, S\u00e9bastien Lombard and Patrice Pierrat stress the role played by the International Space Station in research into in-orbit manufacturing. They go on to present a range of applied and experimental research activities taking place there, the various players involved and the key technologies, together with the challenges and limitations still being faced. While many of these activities are still in their early stages, post-ISS prospects (beyond the year 2030) and the acceleration of technological performance in recent years (SpaceX, Blue Origin etc.) may provide the impetus for some forms of in-orbit manufacturing in more practical volumes and at more affordable cost. Similarly, the revival of manned space exploration and the need to review the management of the satellite infrastructure could also make this industrial niche more attractive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
