The change of direction\u2014begun to some extent by previous American administrations\u2014is now clear: the United States is increasingly withdrawing from the defence of the European continent and from the Atlantic Alliance. It is with its back against the wall, then, that Europe will have to react and implement an independent defence strategy. This is not something that can be done in the blink of an eye but, as Jean-Fran\u00e7ois Drevet stresses here, \u2018letting time do its work\u2019 should now be off the table. The EU has to speed up its reaction and find the institutional, economic and material means to equip itself with a credible common foreign and defence policy.
