Each little story offers a subject for thought, such as connected devices or our relationship with artificial intelligence and data.

Didier Schmitt describes the role of the futures analyst as follows: ‘Looking far ahead is a state of mind. It requires a certain altruism and an empathy toward the future. But scanning the horizon to take a look at the future mustn’t prevent us from seeing what lies in front of us-so that we don’t run the risk of stumbling over what is before our eyes. We need a bifocal vision: we must know how to see both the moon and the finger pointing at it, how to be crazy and wise at the same time.’

In this spirit, the book permits itself a few ‘design fictions’, such as this Foreword: ‘These chapters have been put together by the Cassandra super-algorithm. The information has not been checked by humans, since they are too slow and insufficiently connected and cost-effective. The publisher-also a virtual entity-thus declines all responsibility for inaccuracies.’

This is a staunchly multidisciplinary work… One may, however, regret that the author didn’t venture to tell stories of a more economic or political cast-about a Europe without the British and with low interest rates… But those are doubtless less intoxicating vistas for the explorer of our futures!

We have here a foresight study that takes quite a surprising form.
